Like a bee sting or poison ivy, black henna can be a toxic substance that the human skin is not designed to receive and so reacts negatively towards with itchiness, blistering and can scar permanently. This harmful tattoo technique should be avoided at all costs.

This black henna is produced containing the chemical Para-phenylenediamine (PPD), voted Allergen of the year in 2006 by the American contact dermatitis society, is used commercially as a black hair dye. Skin application of this however is illegal due to its unapproved use and dangerous side effects but this practice unfortunately still continues throughout the world.

As an example of its dangers, the application of PPD in dying hair is done so with extreme precaution, avoiding the scalp and with the use of special gloves but with the unfortunate result of some professionals having to quit due to such extreme reactions. This chemical however is used in undiulited form as ‘black henna’ in Morocco and other henning countries.

Only coming out in a rash after 3 days or more, many unassuming holiday makers wanting a decorative lasting memory of their visit suffer these negative effects once they have left the country.

Substituted as a cheap alternative to natural red/ brown henna and preferred by some negligent or uneducated artists due to its much darker black stain on the skin (pictured: left), resembling a needled ink tattoo, black henna is unfortunately commonly found. Some professionals, including the Henna Café, are taking a stand and working around educating and so eradicating this harmful counter beauty treatment, offering quality safe henna.

Embracing the beauty of natural organic red henna (pictured: right), when applied and cared for correctly, leaves you with a rich earthy stain that lasts between 1 and 4 weeks.

To make your natural henna the best, darkest and most long lasting it can be is most effectively achieved by leaving the paste on for a minimum of 6 hours, keeping it from cold weather, avoiding water for the first 24 hours, and regularly applying essentials oils such as tea tree or olive.

The Henna Café works with local Moroccan women to thaw this negative relationship with unsafe henna, informing them of these dangers to their clients plus themselves. Natural organic safe henna is donated to these women and slowly it is hoped that harmful practice will be outlawed, to be replaced by a love of the intricate beauty that can be achieved by this ecological and pure body art form.

Warmest welcome to the Henna Café

Mission of The Henna Café Project Offering free education to local residents of Marrarkech alongside a unique traditional Moroccan experience for those visiting the city,

the Henna Café is a cultural center in the native heart of the Marrakech Medina providing professional clean Henna tattoos and wonderfully traditional food provided by local women with 100% of profits going to those in need in Marrakech.

The Henna Café charity was set up June 2011 by four UK business people who wanted to give back to Morocco and Marrakech.

As Riad owners and professional henna artists, they came up with the concept of the Henna Café.

Professional Henna Salon
The Henna Café employs local top henna artisan women to run our professional riad friendly henna salon. Supplied with a henna menu of donated designs from top world henna artists, all henna used is safe, clean and organic brown henna. Guests are given a personal aftercare service, which includes a protective mitten/ sock, lemon and sugar sealing, and conversation regarding getting the best out of their henna stain.

Unique Café
Aloft the roof terrace is a café, a space of tranquility and zen with quality local food designed around that eaten by the native population and cooked by Marrakshi women with a range of nomadic specials populated by in-season delights.

Education
Learn some local language in our daily drop in Darija classes or attend our hennaing workshops (suggested donation 20Dm).
These sit alongside the free language and employment skills classes provided and attended by the native population.

Unchanged for years and still filled with traditional butchers of creatures great and small, fruit and vegetable stalls and humble street sellers lining the pavements, Souikat Market is a wonderful non touristic experience and the location of the inspirational Henna Cafe.

Located in the north west of the Marrakech medina is this traditional Moroccan market street drawing Marrakshi people from around the medina due to its roots in what local people remember as the real Morocco. A slow 30 minute stoll or fast 10 minute dash, this market street begins at the Dar el Basha palace and stretches along one street (route Sidi Abdelaziz) to Bab (gate) Doukkala.

Visiting streets such as, when looking for things to do in Marrakech, reminds you of the hospitable and humble nature of the Moroccan population and be assured your money will be well spent and not overspent were you wanting a freshly slaughtered cockerel, wonderfully inexpensive pastry or simply a standard but hugely versatile tajine pot.

Include a stop at the Henna Cafe to taste the delights of local seasonal food or don your limbs with world class, professional henna tattoo.

In keeping with the local cultural experience offered at the Henna Café, seasonal food and drinks are sought and served from all around the Medina to our visitors.

Given to the café by an eccentric local grocery shop owner in a plastic carrier bag (pictured), on offer currently is traditional Moroccan spiced coffee, which consists of 7 spices selected to give a warming feeling during the winter months enjoyed by those across all Morocco.

Morocccan spiced coffee is a drink that is seasoned to individuals taste but most prodominently made with muscat, pepper, ginger, kanella, anise, cezame and gervien khodonjelle.

Local seasonal food based on that which is enjoyed in peoples homes all over the country is what the Henna Café is passionate about and which allows visitors a special experience of what Marrakshi Medina life consists of while being able to support the education of many local people in need.

Try your hand at local Moroccan cuisine with classes at the Henna Cafe. For further details visit us at hennacafemarrakech.com.

The Café founders were on site in addition to the projects current volunteers who stimulated the Moroccan travel heartstrings of passers by imparting the projects aims in Marrakech of education, charity and beautiful safe henna tatoos.

The Henna in London was performed by one of the Cafés artisans and embraced by many in ‘fashionable London’ during the four day event, raising awareness of the issues facing those in Marrakech plus the benefits of quality henna body art.

We would like to thank all that were involved in this event plus the Café volunteer teachers that make the project able to be the beacon of life and culture that it is and will always strive to be.

The latest development at Henna Cafe is our DROP IN DARIJA hour, daily between 3 and 4pm. No appointment is needed to join us for an hour of fun Arabic in the local Moroccan Dialect. Meet our lovely staff and learn a few words to help you better appreciate Marrakech culture and make the most of your stay in the Red City.

The Henna Cafe project gives back to the local community through education, the distribution of food when our resources allow, and by supporting sustainable development. We request a donation of just 20 dirhams (thats about £1.50 or Euros 2.00) for the hour and of course you are welcome to select and purchase from our menu of authentic regional berber coffees and other beverages.

Racing can be seen between said tenant, staff and guests with surprising equality but it just adds to the warming, welcoming and friendly feel of the Henna Cafe in the heart of local Marrakech.

Despite winter coming in, Terry is not one to sleep for any long periods and keeps staff and our chef Fatima busy and loved, asking not to often for a breakfast based around a variety of Tortoise friendly fruit and vegetables.

Quality henna, local seasonal food and tortoise can be found all year round at the Henna Cafe,
See you very soon.

The Henna Cafe is pleased to support projects improving the lives of local people:

10 minutes walk from Place Jemma El Fna and through the Souks at the crossroads of Rue Dar el Bacha and Avenue El Glaoui, you will find a non significant looking metal door with a blue wheelchair sign on. Through this you find a small Moroccan Narnia with the courtyard filled with a variety of plants, a number of interesting looking pet dogs, birds and a lone sheep. This is a centre for the handicapped which is home to 15 paraplegic Moroccan locals.

Henna Cafe visited recently to deliver a donation of cous cous. The man in a chair with a smile is Abdulla, to his left Hassan. Abdulla is living at the centre and was very keen to speak about how he found himself there. In broken French he informed us of his life as a journalist where he worked around the world including living for certain periods in Rio and other parts of Brazil. He occasionally included some English with a excellent accent which obtained while living and working around London’s Fleet street.

Like the others living there, Abdulla was involved in an accident which means he will spend the rest of his life in a chair, however his and the other residents’ beaming smiles and laughter reasure you that, with the help of places like this, life as a handicapped person in Marrakech can be very good.

Most days you will see Abdulla propelling himself down the street to a small local shop wearing a red jumper and speaking with and occasionally breaking into group song with the people he sees.

He is just another reason why this City is so warm, inviting, different, friendly and forever never-endingly curious.
