We are hugely grateful to breast cancer survivor and Londoner Yvette Cowles who is set to bring her one woman show Sequins on my Balcony to Marrakech for a one-off charity performance on Friday 16 January 2015 for the benefit of Henna Cafe.
A soloist with Johara Dance Company and founder of Dance Yourself Happy classes which combine dance and laughter yoga, Yvette believes that belly dancing has played a key role in helping her combat cancer. Already proving popular with UK audiences, Sequins on my Balcony offers a fresh perspective on breast cancer, body image, belly dance and sisterhood through a blend of dance, drama and clowning. In a suitable homage to Josephine Baker, the vaudeville entertainer made famous by her erotic dancing and comedy musical hall routine in the 1920s, the venue for the show will be Riad Star, one time home to Josephine and now a boutique hotel in the old town Medina of Marrakech.
Announcing the date, Yvette said: “I am delighted to support Henna Cafe and doubly delighted to be bringing Sequins on my Balcony to Riad Star. Josephine Baker has long been one of my idols, not just as a hugely talented performer and artist, but as a woman who encountered great prejudice and adversity throughout her life yet was utterly committed to her beliefs. She is an inspiration to us all – and nothing could be more inspiring than performing a benefit concert at the place that was once her home.”
Tickets cost £10 (100 Moroccan dirhams) and can be purchased in person from the Henna Cafe in Marrakech or make contact by email, All the proceeds from ticket sales will come to Henna Cafe.
